A Summer Wedding at Moulin St. Louis | Nathaniel & Lauren

Tuesday, June 10th, 2014

Honestly, I can’t think of a single thing I’d rather do on any given Saturday (or Friday…or Sunday…or any other day of the week for that matter) than photograph a wedding. But let me tell you, I’d been waiting ALL YEAR for Nathaniel and Lauren’s wedding day! When Lauren and I first spoke over the phone about their wedding, I was immediately drawn to her intelligent and quirky sense of humor, and I was in awe of how much she seemed to just be loving life. They had met as undergrads at Vanderbilt, where they bonded over a love of travel, adventure, and a deep desire to give back. In fact, one of their first travel adventures together was spending the summer as volunteers in South America — she at a medical clinic, and he at a preschool. Now she was heading into her final year of med school and applying for residency programs, and Nathaniel had recently embarked on his career as a litigator with a busy Washington DC firm. Their schedules were crazy busy, but they still found time to try out new popsicle recipes, compete in scavenger hunts in our nation’s capital, and continue their quest to find the perfect scoop of ice cream. Seriously, how could I NOT love these two?

Finally Nathaniel and Lauren’s wedding day arrived, and on a beautiful early summer day a couple of weeks ago, their friends and family gathered in St. Louis from all corners of the country and around the world to celebrate them. And what a wonderful day it was! The day was filled with so much joy, warmth, and loads of laughter, and I’m so thrilled to have been there to capture it.

I love Nathaniel’s cufflinks, which were stamped with the coordinates of the locations of their engagement and wedding. Such a thoughtful way to mark those once in a lifetime memories!

The wedding took place at Moulin, where Anne and her staff took such great care of the bridal party throughout the day. While they were getting ready, the guys got to spend some time hanging out in the Malt House Cellar, playing pool, shuffleboard and darts, while the ladies were busy getting beautiful upstairs.

Once Lauren was ready, we set aside a few minutes for a “Dad’s First Look.” I know he was thrilled to get to have a quiet moment with his stunningly beautiful little girl before the day’s festivities officially began.

Then we headed over to Lafayette Park for Nathaniel and Lauren’s first look, which was incredibly tender and sweet.

The bridesmaids’ attire was the perfect combination of classic and fun. I loved that each of the ladies picked different yellow shoes to compliment the gorgeous sunflowers in their bouquets!

Lauren, you are a complete knock out!

One of Nathaniel and Lauren’s long-time friend officiated their wedding ceremony. He struck the perfect balance between humor and sentimentality, and you couldn’t help but be drawn into the emotion of the day.

Lauren’s mom is amazing! She took the lead on the reception decor, as well as the tasty dessert table filled with all sorts of delectable treats. The watering can centerpieces were so adorable, and Lauren and Nathaniel paid homage to their rich family history by displaying their parents’ and grandparents’ wedding photos, along with the hats their grandmothers wore for their weddings. The reception commenced with heartfelt toasts from Lauren’s dad, the Best Man and Maid of Honor, followed by a fun-filled night of dancing.

Congratulations, Nathaniel and Lauren! How blessed you both are to have found your best friend in one another! No matter where life takes you, as long as you go together, you will always have someone with whom you can laugh over a delicious popsicle, ice cream cone, or tasty beer — and that is worth more than you can imagine! Thank you so much for letting me share in your wedding day…I cannot wait to see where life takes you. I know the two of you are going to have a wonderful life together!

Cheers!

Summer Picnic-Inspired New York Wedding: Andrew & Amanda – Part 2

Friday, December 27th, 2013

Yesterday, I shared with you part one of Andrew and Amanda’s summer picnic wedding. After their wedding, Amanda and I discussed what went on behind-the-scenes to put together such a gorgeous, heartfelt wedding. She told me, “It was important that our wedding felt like a big gathering of our family and friends, so we were looking for a theme that wasn’t high maintenance or pretentious. We wanted everyone to feel comfortable while they celebrated with us. In thinking about our favorite times with family and friends, we settled on a summer picnic theme – everyone coming together for good food, good drinks, and good company. The picnic theme was relaxed enough to fit our vision, but we could still dress it up a little and make it feel really special.”

Planning is in Amanda’s nature, and their wedding was no exception. Every last detail was meaningful, and this has to be my favorite “Something Blue” ever. Her cousin and bridesmaid Megan suggested finding a way to remember the members of our family who have passed away, so Amanda carried a little slip of paper with the names of their grandparents and Andrew’s uncle handwritten in blue ink by each of their parents.

“We both value family and Andrew grew up in a household of anthropologists, so it was really important to us that our ceremony and celebration reflect the items and traditions that are important to both of our families. It was also really important that every element of our wedding truly reflect us, so for the standard wedding traditions we opted to observe, we tried to personalize them – like joining syrup from our home states instead of a lighting a unity candle or pouring sand,” Amanda shared. She continued, “We designed our ceremony ourselves but with the guidance of our officiant, who was the pastor of the church I grew up in. She recommended asking our families to each choose a reading as an offering to us, which we did. Both of our families took that assignment very seriously, and we ended up with a mix of funny and traditional readings. They were perfect. We also borrowed from the Quaker tradition and asked all of our guests to sign a certificate with our vows on them as witnesses to our commitment, and we now have a beautiful visual reminder of the friends and family who were there with us.”

No sooner had the ceremony ended than a few rain clouds rolled in. Before the rain came, though, Andrew and Amanda stole a few minutes to take leave of their guests and share some time reflecting and celebrating the fact that they were finally Mr. & Mrs! The lush and beautiful grounds of Lake Lodge were the perfect backdrop for their display of complete joy.

We did manage to get caught in the rain, but Amanda’s uncle Craig was on standby with his and her umbrellas to keep the lovebirds dry. By divine providence, the umbrellas even matched the blue and yellow picnic theme.

Reception details? Perfection! Seriously, Amanda thought of EVERYTHING!

Andrew and Amanda’s reception kicked off with the traditional first dances, and in the true spirit of the day, there was no shortage of emotion to photograph.

As the sun was setting, the rain finally broke, so we sneaked out and headed down to the dock for a few more couple portraits. Andrew is ever the gentleman, and I know he will spend his lifetime making Amanda proud.
